Enid Welcome Table is a restaurant-style community meal on Sunday evenings for ANYONE who is hungry. The meal is planned, prepared and served by a different volunteer group each week. The program kicked off in May 2018 and to date we have served 8,064 guests with 3,647 volunteers. About 60 different organizations have served the meals. Many of this number have served two or more times.
A few people have commented that they “know” there are people taking advantage of the program. Our invitation is open to “anyone who is hungry, lonely or just wants a meal”. Our requirements are “no disruptive behavior, no weapons, no drugs or alcohol”. With those few criteria, we do not feel we are being taken advantage of. God will sort out the bad actors in the end, it is not up to us to decide.
What we have learned is that our guests are mostly lonely and food insecure, due to whatever reason, mental illness, substance abuse or poor financial choices. “Food Insecurity” affects households as well as the homeless.
Even though feeding is our primary mission, we often become aware of other needs such as dental supplies, feminine hygiene products, dry socks, blankets, shoes and coats.
Our church provides the place, the dishes and silverware, tablecloths and decorations plus an experienced set of volunteers to provide leadership for our hosts. We strive to be good stewards of the wonderful facility we are allowed to use. The Welcome Table regularly replaces kitchen supplies, towels, aprons, repairs and new items to make food preparation easier.
Thanks to a couple of grants and regular donations from the congregation, the Welcome Table is on solid financial footing. Our calendar is filling up through the end of the year.
It is a blessing to be a part of this ministry.
